IMPORTANT NOTE: Slides 12-15 contain book titles and table of contents from Chinese books on bioethics or medical ethics. These books are not, so far as we know, available in English. Prof. Ikels has simply listed her own English translation of the table of contents here.

Professor Ikels is Professor of Anthropology Emerita at Case Western Reserve University and Lecturer in the Department of Global Health and Social Medicine at Harvard Medical School. She received her BA from Radcliffe College and her Ph.D. from the University of Hawaii. She is the author, co-author, or editor of four books: Aging and Adaptation: Chinese in Hong Kong and the United States 1983, The Aging Experience: Diversity and Commonality across Cultures 1992, The Return of the God of Wealth: The Transition to a Market Economy in Urban China 1996, and Filial Piety: Practice and Discourse in Contemporary East Asia 2004 as well as numerous articles and book chapters. Her most recent work has focused on the development of the field of bioethics in China where in 2007 she delivered an invited talk on Western perceptions of China’s organ transplantation programs to the Medical Ethics Branch of the Chinese Medical Association at its biennial meeting.
